Formerly called Thanon Chao Krung Thon, the road was built in 1931 during the reign of King Rama VII, with a total distance of 4.8 kilometers, the road begins from Latya Road running down to meet Somdet Chao Phraya Road. It was one of the governments 11-Roads construction project on Thonburi side at that time. After Phra Phuttha Yotfa Bridge construction to link Phra Nakhon and Thonburi sides was completed.
The name Itsaraphap Road was given by Somdet Krom Phraya Damrong Rachanuphap who was assigned by King Rama VII to name all the newly build roads. The name was related to Mahachai (The Great Victory) theme in commemoration to Phrachao Krung Thonburi (King Taksin the Great)’s victory army. In the old days, this area was the settlements of Shi’ah Sect Muslims. Therefore, 3 Chao Sen Muslim monasteries namely Kudi Charoenphat, Kudi Plaina, and Kudi Phadung Tham can be found in this area.
