Wat Thammikarat | Buddhist Temple | Ayutthaya Historical Park

Situated in front of the royal palace of Ayutthaya, Wat Thammikarat houses a large Ubosoth, only the base and some walls remaining but it gives a good impression of the size of the building.

According to records, Wat Thammikarat was set up by Phraya Thammikarat, who was the son of King Sainam Phung, before the Ayutthaya period started. Originally it was called Wat Mukkharat but later on the name was changed to honor Phraya Thammikarat.

The temple compound also houses a small building dedicated to Rahu. In Hindu mythology Rahu is a snake that swallows the sun or the moon causing eclipses. As well as being home to some temple ruins, Wat Thammikarat is also a working temple with 12 metre reclining buddha.

The ruins include a viharn which exhibits a large tree growing out from its walls – an attractive photo opportunity.
