Portuguese Settlement | Archaeology Museum | Ayutthaya Historical Park

Portuguese village is located on the west bank of Chao Phraya River, at the Southern part of Ayutthaya province.

The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive at Ayutthaya in 1151. The settlement, covering an area of over half a square kilometer, was probably the biggest western community in Ayutthaya with a population estimated at 3,000 people.

Most of them were militia, shipbuilders and merchants. Within the Portuguese settlement were three Catholic Churches, Franciscan, Jesuit and Dominican orders.

Today in Ayutthaya tourists can see at the Portuguese Settlement the brick ruins and inside a modern building is a very interesting archaeological site of the Portuguese cemetery excavated to the burial positions of the remaining skeletons now exposed to view.
