We all know the Indonesian island of Bali because it is one of the most famous tropical islands on our planet. Of course there are also many businesses there. One of them is the Greek restaurant Nostimo Bali, owned by Alexis Filippidis. We caught up with Alexis and asked him a few things about Nostimo and his life in Bali.

How did you end up in Bali, Indonesia?

Before working in the catering industry, I worked for a multinational, with which I undertook projects and positions of responsibility in its factories and offices around the world. So I was lucky enough to live and work in different countries for 12 years, including Indonesia. During my second transfer to Indonesia, I decided to fulfill my desire to build my own business and start a new life.

So I made the – not easy – decision to leave my comfort zone, resign (along with my wife from her own job) and move to Bali to build our life from scratch.

Can you tell us a few things about Nostimo Bali, its beginnings, etc.

The idea of ​​a Greek restaurant in Bali started from a plate, developed into a discussion and into a thought that matured in a short time. When I arrived in Bali I already had a detailed Business Plan ready on my agenda.

Of course, every beginning is difficult. The road was not paved, nor was the market waiting for me with open arms. On an island half the size of Crete and with 6,000 restaurants already operating, and on my part having zero experience in the field of catering, things were not easy.

With hard work, patience, perseverance in the Business plan, with confidence in the strategy and with luck on our side, Nostimos survived, established itself in the market and the consciousness of the world and a year later got a sibling, our second restaurant in Ubud of Bali.

Can you tell us a few things about Bali where you live, about Indonesia, the culture etc.

Many imagine Bali as a tropical paradise with endless beaches and palm trees. There are those too, but Bali is a popular tourist destination with all that entails.

Traffic on the streets, bars, restaurants, parties, noise, trash but also rainforests, rice fields, Hindu temples, daily religious ceremonies, smiling faces and beaches, sun, and tropical rains make up a unique mosaic that fascinates visitors. As it fascinated me.

In which other parts of Indonesia (but also in Asia) have you traveled, some beaches, islands that left you speechless?

I’ve traveled to many parts of Indonesia (it’s a huge country with hundreds of island complexes) and almost all of Southeast Asia with the exception of Laos which is definitely in my plans at some point.

Aww, I can’t say that any place in particular left me, but let’s not forget that I was born and raised in one of the objectively most beautiful countries in the world, so my criteria are subconsciously and more “strict”.

What do you miss from Greece?

Definitely my family. My parents, my brothers, my nieces and nephews… That’s all I miss. The others you get used to or replace. I am of the opinion that “where you land, you belong”.
