Fotis Theocharis | Mountain Climber | Adventurer | Dreams Follower

Fotis Theoharis comes from a small village called Viniani in Evrytania, Greece, where contact with nature was part of his daily life. He recently conquered the summit of the third highest and most difficult mountain on earth, Kangchenjunga, at 8,586 meters in the Himalayas, a great Greek mountaineering success in peaks that exceed 8,000 meters, while at the same time supporting the charity work of the organization “The Smile of a Child”.

What was the easiest and most difficult climb you’ve done so far?

To me there are two kinds of climbing, one figurative and one literal. Metaphorical I would call the climbing I do on myself to be able to conquer it.

Literal climbing, the ascent and descent of approximately the last 1300 meters on the world’s third highest mountain, Mount Kangchenjunga in the Himalayas, which has a total elevation of 8686 meters.

Has your life ever been in danger somewhere?

When climbing, it is very easy to be in danger because you are constantly exposed, perhaps for a long time, to unpredictable situations such as the technical difficulties of the mountain, weather conditions, etc. I have personally been in danger on a mountain and was saved by luck.

We would like you to tell us a few words about the last climb you did on Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa?

The well-known Kilimanjaro with a height of 5895 meters, which is an inactive volcano, was in my plans to climb it as well as to dedicate it to the work of ActionAid Hellas, as it finally happened. I would describe Kilimanjaro as a beautiful mountain. During our climb to the top we encountered many different changes of scenery.

At the start of the climb we traversed a large section from the east side of the mountain to roughly the west side, starting through a rainforest where we were surrounded by various African animals such as blue monkeys. We then passed through a scrubby landscape ending in an inhospitable lunar-type landscape devoid of vegetation with broken rocks, while at the top we faced the imposing glaciers that dominate there.

“One night a man had a dream. He dreamed that he was walking on the path with the Lord. Scenes from his life appeared in the sky. For each scene he noticed two pairs of footprints on the path, one of himself and the other of the Lord .After the last scene of his life appeared before him, he looked back at the footprints on the path.

He noticed that many times, on the path of his life, there was only one pair of footprints. He also noticed that this happened during the most difficult and sad moments of his life. This troubled him and he asked the Lord: “Lord, you said that from the moment I decided to follow you, you would walk with me the whole way. However, I noticed that, in the most difficult moments of my life, there was only one pair of footprints. I don’t understand why when I needed you the most, you abandoned me.” The Lord replied: “My precious child, I love you and I would never leave you.

The time when you were tested and suffered, where you only saw a pair of footprints, that’s when I took you in my arms.”

Tell us some of the most beautiful scenery you’ve encountered while climbing, breathtaking scenery.

Having traveled with successful actions to my credit in the Alps (France, Switzerland, Italy), Andes (Argentina), Caucasus (Russia, Georgia), Africa (Tanzania) and Himalayas (India, Nepal), I believe that all the above mountains are characterized by landscapes of unique beauty that have colored my own painting and have been pieces of a puzzle of beautiful memories.

Every mountain and place I see creates strong feelings of awe and gratitude.

What are the future goals, some peaks of the world that are in the program to climb?

I love not only traveling the mountains of the world but also getting to know the culture that surrounds them. At the moment, my immediate goals are to successfully complete an undertaking that involves the ascent of the 113 main mountain ranges of our country. This action is dedicated to the organization “The Child’s Smile”.

As for climbing foreign mountain peaks, the plan is to try to climb the highest mountain in North Africa before long, and my future goals are to climb the highest mountain in the Middle East respectively.

The Child’s Smile is a voluntary, non-profit organization that operates in Greece, with the aim of defending children’s rights and dealing with their daily problems.
